By now you’ve probably heard about just how wonderful lemon water can be for your health. I was admittedly a bit skeptical about this one, thinking it was just another health craze. I became more interested when my mom started drinking it every day to improve her digestion. Digestive issues seem to run in our family, and mom has suffered from them off and on for years. After she’d been drinking lemon water every day for a couple of months, I asked her if she’d noticed a difference. She said she definitely had and that she’d been having fewer and fewer bad days. She suggested I try it out and I thought, why not?

Before I started adding lemon water to my daily routine, I did a little research. I discovered that it had a bunch of beneficial qualities along with a couple drawbacks. If you’re interested in seeing just how lemon water can impact your health, it’s important to be aware of everything good and bad it can do.

Immune System Booster

Lemons, much like oranges, are full of vitamin C. We’re often told to consume a lot of vitamin C if we feel like we’re getting sick. This is because it’s a vitamin that improves the body’s ability to heal. It fuels cell growth and repair, and our bodies also use it to create proteins that in turn create blood vessels and skin.

Increased Energy

Much like coffee, drinking lemon water first thing in the morning can give you that energy boost you need. It both oxygenates and hydrates the body, making you feel energized. What’s more, it does this without the eventual crash that comes from caffeinated drinks. If you need that extra energy most days but don’t want the side effects of caffeine, lemon water will do the trick.

Cleansing

Citric acid, which lemons have in abundance, has been proven to help the dissolution of kidney and pancreatic stones. Additionally it can help to prevent the formation of those stones in the first place, making it a great preventative measure to take if you’re at all worried about that kind of problem!

Skin Rejuvenation

All that vitamin C lemons have is great for skin rejuvenation. Our bodies use vitamin C to create collagen, which increases skin elasticity and strength. It also replaces dead skin cells. Water and lemon together act as hydrating agents for skin, keeping it healthy and supple.

Aiding Digestion

Lemon water stimulates both your digestive processes and your liver’s functions. When this happens, it can adjust your metabolism to ideal levels and can regulate bowel movements, too. The end result is that your body is absorbing increased levels of beneficial nutrients. These improvements to the digestive process can result in weight loss.

The Disadvantages

While drinking a daily dose of lemon water obviously has its advantages, there are some disadvantages that need to be considered, too:

  • Citric acid erodes tooth enamel. In order to prevent this, try drinking lemon water through a straw instead of straight from a glass. Don’t swish it around in your mouth and try drinking it quickly instead of sipping on it for a couple of hours. Once you’re done, rinse your mouth out with regular water.

  • Citric acid can cause or increase heartburn. If you’re prone to heartburn and you’re not on some kind of inhibitor, a daily dose of lemon water can make things worse for you. The best thing for you to do is talk to your doctor in this case, because you don’t want to make a bad situation worse.

The Pros Outweigh the Cons

Lemon water is about as natural and healthy as it gets. What’s more, it’s affordable and easy to implement into your diet. A glass of lemon water a day can go a long way toward improving your energy, revitalizing your skin, and increasing your body’s digestive functions. Since I’ve started drinking it I’ve noticed a definite change in the way I feel on a day-to-day basis, especially since it’s become my substitute for coffee. If you’re looking to make a small but substantially healthy addition to your diet, lemon water is a great way to start!

It’s a great habit to start in the morning to improve your health and metabolism just like a glass with water and Apple Cider Vinegar. You want to learn more? Read the article here.
