Tie dye patterns may be a blast from the past, but we are absolutely loving this retro trend for modern day too! In this article, we’ll teach you how to tie dye socks so you can rock your own cool pair of colorful footwear this season!

For each tie dye sock tutorial, you’ll need the following items:

Before we start tie dying, you’ll also want to make sure your materials are prepped. This means mixing the pigment powder dyes with water and filling up the bottles that come with your kit. If your kit doesn’t come with guidelines, we recommend only filling up half of the bottle with water to see the saturation and then adding more after the powder is mixed.

Once that’s ready, it’s time to learn how to tie dye socks!

2. Bullseye and Stripes

  1. If you want to know how to tie dye socks with multiple patterns, then this is the tutorial for you. 
  2. Wrap one rubber band on the side of each sock to make the first bullseye.
  3. Add another band an inch from the first one.
  4. Now starting at the toe, add 3 more rubber bands in sections.
  5. We’re using blue, baby blue, yellow, and red for our colors. Squirt the dye around the edges of the rubber bands.
  6. Wrap the socks in a plastic bag and let them soak for 1 hour.
  7. Rinse the socks under cold water before washing.

 

3. Shibori Rainbow

  1. To follow this tutorial on how to tie dye socks, make small pleats from the toe to the cuff of the sock. 
  2. Tie off with 2 rubber bands.
  3. Repeat with the other sock.
  4. Spray your colors next to the band (we are using baby blue, yellow, purple, and red).
  5. Stack one sock on top of the other and wrap in a plastic bag for 1 hour.
  6. Rinse the socks under cold water before washing.

 

4. Sunset Stripes

  1. Fold one sock in half along the heel line and tie off with a rubber band. 
  2. Add another band at the toe and another and the leg.
  3. Repeat with the other sock.
  4. Color the socks with your dye (we chose yellow, orange, and red).
  5. Wrap the socks in a plastic bag and let them soak for 1 hour.
  6. Rinse the socks under cold water before washing.

5. Heart

How to tie dye socks - Heart

  1. This tutorial is easier if you have a pencil to make a mark for the heart. After folding the sock down the middle, use the pencil to draw half a heart in the center. 
  2. Use this pencil mark as a guide of where to fold the sock. Add a rubber band around the line to seal the heart shape.
  3. Add another band to the foot and 2 more along the leg.
  4. Repeat with the other sock.
  5. Color with blue, yellow, and red dye.
  6. Wrap the socks in a plastic bag and let them soak for 1 hour.
  7. Rinse the socks under cold water before washing.

6. Classic Stripes

  1. Using 5 rubber bands, tie the sock together from toe to cuff, leaving an inch in between each band.
  2. Spray your colors (we used brown, red, purple, and green) in alternating patterns on the rubber bands.
  3. Wrap the socks in a plastic bag and let them soak for 1 hour.
  4. Rinse the socks under cold water before washing.
