Is it time to skip store-bought dog treats and become a dog treat maker yourself? We bet it is! When adopting a four-legged friend, you essentially add a new member to your family. And as such, dogs deserve nurturing and love.

So what better way to show your affection other than homemade dog treats?  We get it. Just like children, dogs are expensive to care for. From dog subscription boxes to pet products, things can get pricey fast. Thankfully, treats don’t have to cost a lot of dough. Plus, they’re super easy to make and much healthier than your store-bought snacks.

That’s why in this article, we’ll guide you into making your own delicious dog cake, perfect for the birthdays of your little pooch or everyday pleasures. We like to keep things simple, all-natural, and tasty. So you’ve got nothing to fear, and we guarantee your loyal companion will appreciate the effort. Let’s get to work!

Become a Master Dog Treat Maker with This Cake

Ingredients:

Dog treat ingredients - dog treat maker

1 cup (200gr) grated carrots

⅓ cup (85gr) natural peanut butter

2 eggs

Dog biscuits

½ (125gr) Greek yogurt

2 cups (400gr) mashed sweet potatoes

Tools:

A large bowl

Silicone spatula

A cake board

A cake pan with baking paper

Round cutter

Instructions:

You want to start by preheating the oven to 350F so that it’s nice and warm for your cake to bake. After shredding your carrots, add them to a large bowl along with the peanut butter and the eggs. Stir until the mix is combined, and transfer it to the baking pan.

You can use the cake pan shape of your preference, but we highly recommend this gorgeous Wilton Paw Print Cake Pan for evenly baked cakes and heavenly decorations. Bake the mixture in the oven for 20 min at 350F, and once the cake is ready, let it cool at room temperature. For the frosting, you’ll need to mix the Greek yogurt and the mashed sweet potatoes until they’re well combined.

Now it’s time to become an expert dog treat maker and build your puppy’s cake! For smaller dogs, we recommend using a round cutter such as this 3pk Biscuit Cutter to cut cake layers and spread the frosting on top. Add some garnishing carrots and your favorite dog treats, too.

For larger dogs, you can spread the frosting directly on your pan-shaped cake and serve. If not served immediately, you can store your dog cake or any leftovers in the refrigerator in a container for up to 3 days. And there you have it; You’re officially a dog treat maker!

FAQs for Dog Treat Makers

Dog Treat Ingredients - dog treat maker

Is It Okay to Add Birthday Candles to Dog Cakes?

We don’t recommend adding candles, sugar, or sprinkles to dog cakes as they’re not safe for your puppy. Opt for some healthy carrots, and scrumptious dog treats instead!

What Are Some Dog Cake Variations?

We love variations, and it shows; that’s why we’ll suggest 3 alternatives to this delicious cake recipe:

  • Peanut Butter — You can replace peanut butter with sunflower seed butter or almond butter for the same flavorful result. However, be aware that some dogs can’t digest almonds or seeds, so you might want to avoid those options.
  • Cauliflower — No cauliflower, no problem! Use some extra sweet potatoes instead, and your puppy is in for a treat.
  • Carrots — Yes, you can even replace carrots with some shredded zucchini, peeled, or with its skin on.

Can Dogs Eat Eggs?

As the ultimate dog treat maker, you should know that dogs eat eggs, which are an excellent source of protein and nutrients. In fact, you can boil them, scramble them, or put them in cakes. Of course, your furry friend won’t mind!

Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?

Yes! Peanut butter is absolutely safe for your puppies as long as it’s free from added sugar, salt, or oil (these additives might be unhealthy in the long run). Also, try to avoid peanut butter with xylitol, as it’s dangerous for pups. Instead, opt for all-natural peanut butter and serve it to your fur babies as an occasional treat.

Can Dogs Eat Cauliflower?

Yes, cauliflower is non-toxic and safe for dogs. It’s also packed with vitamins and nutrients and is low in calories.

Can Dogs Eat Baking Powder?

In occasional homemade treats, baking powder shouldn’t be a problem in small amounts. However, when consumed in large quantities, it can cause severe digestive issues, so it’s safe to avoid it. In our recipe, you can add ½ teaspoon of baking powder. If you’re unsure about it, feel free to skip it. It’ll probably result in a flat and dense cake, but your dog won’t mind the texture!

Can Dogs Eat Carrots?

Absolutely! Dogs can eat raw or cooked carrots. However, it’s recommended to shred or cut them into bite-size sticks to avoid choking.

Can Dogs Eat Potatoes?

Raw potatoes are toxic for dogs because they contain solanine. But you can give dogs well-cooked, boiled potatoes and there should be no problem!

How Much Cake Should My Dog Eat?

This dog birthday cake contains about 900 kcal. Smaller dogs eat around 240 kcal per day, while larger active dogs eat up to 2,000 kcal per day. Therefore, depending on the size of your dog, you’ll need to determine the cake quantity you’ll be serving. Even if all the ingredients are dog-safe, offering the whole cake but letting the dog eat about ¼ of it would be a great birthday treat.
