Air dry clay has quickly become a popular pastime. There are so many fun things that can be made, and it really doesn’t take that long to do so! With Christmas right around the corner, air dry clay can be perfect for making gift tags, party favors, and table seat tags all with a creative twist! But the options really are endless. Here are a few air dry clay ideas for you to try this holiday season.

How to Get Started with Air Dry Clay

To get started with these air dry clay ideas, you will need the following tools:

Once you’ve gathered your materials, it’s time to get started on your air dry clay ideas. First, you’ll want to knead and soften up your clay so that it’s easy to work with. Then, use your rolling pin to roll the clay out until it is about 4 mm thick. Flip the clay over so that you can roll out both sides until they’re nice and smooth. Now your clay is prepped and ready for our two air dry clay ideas.

Air Dry Clay Ideas

Project Number One: Ornaments

Use cookie cutters like Christmas ones from Target to cut the clay out. Once you’ve cut out the shapes of your choice, use a cylindrical object like a chopstick (Etsy has some fun options!) to poke a hole in your shapes. Then, clean up the edges with some water. You can use your fingers or some tools to help smooth the edges. Let the shapes dry out on parchment paper.

Project Number Two:

Using a ruler, cut some strips and decorate as you desire. Then, wrap the strips around a tube or cylindrical object. Cut the excess off the clay and combine the two ends together with some water. Once combined, remove the clay from the tube and clean up the edges again if need be. You can let the clay dry out on parchment paper.

Your creations will take about 20 to 24 hours to dry. About half ways through the drying process, flip the clay upside down so that it can dry evenly. Once your clay has fully dried, paint over it with a clear nail polish or top coat nail polish and let it dry. If you want to paint your creations, you can use some acrylic paint or nail polish.

Air dry clay is so fun and easy to work with. Once you have the idea down, feel free to experiment and try out other ideas! From ornaments to bowls to jewelry holders, the options are endless!
