Easter Bread Recipe with Colored Eggs

easter bread

We’ll start by dying the Easter bread eggs just like you would for an egg hunt. They don’t need to be cooked beforehand as they’ll bake in the oven along with the bread. If you prefer your eggs hard-boiled over soft-boiled, steam or boil them for a few minutes before baking.

Ingredients for the eggs:

  • Coloring food dye
  • 4 white eggs
  • A spoon
  • Water

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 4 cups white flour (plus more for kneading)
  • 2 eggs for the dough
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • 2 ¼ tbsp yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 egg beaten
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • Colored sprinkles

Tools:

  • Brush
  • Pastry scraper
  • A spoon
  • Silicone spatula
  • Baking paper
  • Kitchen towel
  • Metal hook (for the mixer)
  • Stand-up mixer
  • Working board

Dying instructions for Easter bread eggs:

  1. Add each food dye coloring into a plastic cup.
  2. Pour water into each cup and mix with a spoon.
  3. Gently place the egg into the cup. Make sure that it’s completely submerged in the dye.
  4. Place the cups to the side and let them do their magic!

Instructions for Easter bread:

  1. Put the yeast into a small bowl and add a little bit of milk. Stir together and let the mixture proof for a few minutes.
  2. Add the sugar, salt, eggs, butter, and milk to the mixer bowl.
  3. Using the dough hook, mix the ingredients on medium speed for 2 or so minutes. You can scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed.
  4. Now add the yeast mixture to the bowl.
  5. Turn the mixer back on and let it knead the dough for another 10 minutes. The dough should be stiff and slightly sticky.
  6. Remove the dough from the hook and bowl and shape it into a ball if necessary. Now, cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
  7. While the dough is resting, take the dyed eggs out of the cups to dry.

Shaping the Easter Bread

  1. Once the dough has rested, we can now shape it into our Easter bread. Place the dough on a working board and divide it into 4 sections. Shape each section into a ball.
  2. Add some flour to the board.
  3. Take one dough ball and roll it into a rope that is roughly 14 inches long. The width of the rope should be about 1 inch. Continue with the remaining 3 balls of dough.
  4. Cut the rope into two separate pieces. You can roll them to reshape them if needed.
  5. Pinch the ends of the two ropes together and start to braid.
  6. Now, loop the long braid into a circle to form a wreath shape.
  7. Take one of your dyed eggs and place it in the center of the circle. Don’t press the egg into the dough – the egg will stick while baking.
  8. Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough.
  9. Let the wreaths rise in a warm, draft-free room for 1 to 2 hours.
  10. To prepare the wreaths for baking, brush them with an egg wash and cover them with sprinkles.
  11. Place them to bake in a 350°F (177ºC) oven for 15 to 20 minutes. When they are ready, the bread should be a beautiful golden brown.
  12. Take them out of the oven and let them cool on the baking rake for 5 to 10 minutes before you transfer them to a plate.
  13. Serve to friends and family, and enjoy!
