As far as yarn goes, we recommend using a thinner, silkier option when you want your garland to hang with a bit of a drape. On the other hand, to achieve the chunky style pom pom, opt for thicker yarn with more wool or cotton in it.

Instructions:

Yarn around fork - how to make pom poms

Before creating your pom poms, you need to decide on colors and styles. For example, consider white, red, and green if you’re creating a Christmas garland. On the contrary, if the occasion calls for a Halloween garland, orange and black are some favorite classic ones. Once you’ve settled on your preferred colors, it’s time to do the actual work.

Firstly, cut a piece of yarn of at least 10 cm. Next, take your fork and place the yarn in its middle place. Grab the rest of your yarn and start winding it around the fork about 30 to 35 times. Once that’s done, take the spare yarn we left at the beginning, tie it in the middle of the winding yarn, and secure it. Then, you want to use the fork to brush and open the yarn’s twist.

Now, your pom pom has a shape, but it’s time to give it a bit of a trim with the scissors. So start by cutting its ends, and trim the shape all around. As for your spare yarn, you can use it to tie a knot as a hanging loop. And there you have it, your very first pom pom!

How to Make Pom Poms of Bigger Sizes?

If you want to make a bigger one, the process is quite similar, only now we’re using two fork tongs instead of one. So, you start by placing a piece of yarn in the middle of your fingers and then wind the remaining yard around your fingers about 30 to 35 times. Then, you want to carefully remove it and tie the spare yarn in the center. After that, make sure to cut the ends, brush, and trim the shape all around, and you’ll have your larger pom poms in no time!

What we love about pom poms is that you can mix multiple colors and styles and create fun and playful decor. For example, you can mix yarns of different colors and wind them together to create a multicolored one. Or you could layer different colors of yarn to obtain new combinations. The possibilities are endless as long as you let your imagination flow.

Make a Garland

Now that your pom poms are ready, it’s time to give your garland its final look. So cut a long piece of yarn and insert it in the needle. Next, pass it through the middle of your pom poms and secure the yarn with a stitch for the first and last pompom. This is where you can get creative by alternating the big ones with the smaller ones and mixing colors up. Once you secure the last one with a stitch, your garland is ready to hang!

Want to Create a Tree?

Essentially, you follow the exact same process as above, and once you’re satisfied with them, you can arrange them on branches. Then, to secure them in place, you can either tie them to the branches or easily insert the branches.
