Making Natural Toothpaste

This DIY toothpaste is formulated by Dr. Janine Bowring, and it’s super quick and easy. To begin, you will need the following ingredients:

-8 teaspoons of calcium powder

-1-2 teaspoons of baking soda

4 teaspoons of xylitol powder

-4 teaspoons of coconut oil

-10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil

Steps

Making this toothpaste really couldn’t be any easier! To begin, add the calcium powder, baking soda, and xylitol powder to a mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients together. Then, add the coconut oil and mix until the ingredients are well blended. Now, add in the peppermint essential oil. You can always do fewer drops than suggested if you are sensitive to peppermint or just want less of a minty taste. Stir in the peppermint oil. Now, your natural toothpaste is ready to go! You can store it in a small plastic container, like this travel cosmetic jar, for easy access.

This natural toothpaste still has all the necessary properties to keep your teeth healthy and your smile shiny. The calcium powder works to strengthen your enamel and prevent tooth decay. The baking soda helps to lift away stains and plaque, while also neutralizing acidity in your mouth. This makes it harder for pesky cavity-causing bacteria to survive. Xylitol powder is a low-calorie sweetener that also has prebiotic effects. The coconut oil helps fight off bacteria with its antimicrobial properties and its moisture helps to soothe and nourish the gums. Lastly, the peppermint essential oil has antibacterial properties and provides your toothpaste with a nice minty flavor.

Now you know how to make natural toothpaste, and you know about each ingredient you use! Your teeth will still get cleaned, and you can feel better about this natural, chemical-free toothpaste!

The ingredients in your natural toothpaste can also be helpful for other reasons! Take the peppermint essential oil, for example. Essential oils have so many great benefits for all kinds of health purposes. They are definitely worth looking into and stocking up on!

Why Natural Is Better

Chemical toothpastes have been around for a while, and many people don’t think twice before buying them. But most store-bought toothpastes contain a whole range of toxic ingredients. In fact, swallowing toothpaste is the top reason parents call Poison Control!

If ingested in too great of quantities, fluoride can cause nausea and vomiting. Other toxic substances in toothpaste include alcohol and artificial sweeteners, both of which have carcinogenic properties.

Natural toothpastes, on the other hand, contain fewer toxic ingredients. As such, you should always read the labels on the tube if you choose to purchase in-store.
