Romantic Surprise Inside Cake Recipe for Valentine’s Day

This recipe should take less than 1.5 hours to make. Set aside 10 minutes for prep, 40 minutes for baking, and 20 minutes for decorating!

Ingredients for the Cake:

  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 cup (200gr) White Sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup sunflower seed Oil
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp (150gr) white Flour
  • 1 cup (100gr) Cocoa powder
  • 2 cup (300ml) Whipped Cream
  • 4 tablespoons Powdered Sugar
  • Raspberries
  • Cranberries
  • Red Food coloring

You can find all these ingredients in FreshDirect!

Materials:

  • A surprise gift of your choice
  • 3 mixing bowls
  • Silicone spatula
  • Baking paper
  • Plastic wrap
  • Knife
  • Sewing thread
  • Round Baking pan (about 20cm circular)
  • A round glass (for storing the gift)
  • A round cookie cutter
  • A Chopping board
  • A Hand mixer
  • Pastry bag

Baking Instructions

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F or 180°C
  2. Crack your eggs and separate the yolks from the whites. Set the whites aside (we will use them later) and add the yolks into a large bowl.
  3. Add the sugar into the bowl with the yolks.
  4. Using a hand mixer, blend the yolks and sugar until thoroughly mixed.
  5. Now, add the milk and oil into the bowl. Whip together with the hand mixer.
  6. Once everything is mixed, add the sifted baking powder and flour along with the cocoa powder to the bowl. Blend once more until the batter is smooth and creamy.
  7. Next, clean the hand mixer so we can work on the second part of our surprise cake recipe.
  8. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites with the hand mixer until light and fluffy. You should be able to form peaks with the whites.
  9. With a silicone spatula, add the egg whites into the batter. You’ll want to fold the whites into the batter as gently as possible until everything is mixed together.
  10. For the next step of our surprise cake recipe, we’ll need to line the round baking pan with baking paper. We crumble our baking paper to make it more malleable. Make sure to cover the bottom of the pan as well as the inside edges. Cut any excess paper that overflows over the sides.
  11. Pour the batter into the pan and bake in the oven for approximately 40 minutes.

Preparing the Surprise

  1. Once the cake is finished, let it rest until it’s completely cool. Cooling the cake is crucial, especially if we want our decorations to stick to it!
  2. Remove the paper with the cake inside from the pan.
  3. Now, we will cut the cake into three layers. Cut a long piece of sewing thread and hold it taut between your fingers.
  4. Find a spot roughly 1/3 from the top. Starting from the backside of the cake, pull the thread evenly towards you to make the first layer.
  5. Repeat again another 1/3 down the cake, cutting a second layer with the thread.
  6. Feel free to use the knife to shave any crust around the outside of the cake.
  7. Take off the top layer and set it aside. Using a round cookie cutter, cut through the mid and bottom layer of the cake.
  8. Our last step is to fill and garnish our surprise cake! In a bowl, add the whipping cream, powdered sugar, and a few drops of red food coloring.
  9. Blend the mixture together until you have a thick and creamy pink frosting.
  10. Fill the pastry bag with the cream.
  11. Starting on the bottom layer, add the frosting around the ring of the cake.
  12. Gently place the second layer on top of the cream.
  13. Add another layer of frosting on the second layer.
  14. Place your gift in the center of the cake (you can place it in a cup and cover the top with plastic wrap to protect it from getting messy!).
  15. Place the top layer on the cake. Decorate the top with the remaining frosting and garnish with raspberries and cranberries. Serve it to your special someone on Valentine’s Day and watch their eyes light up with surprise!
